LA President Tapped for National Role

As part of the three-member nominating committee, Thomas will help identify and recruit League leadership as the organization gears up for a second century of activism.

Hilda  Walker Thomas, President of the LWV-LA since 2019, has been tapped for additional duties at the national level. The St. Tammany resident joins the LWV-US leadership team as a member of the Nominating Committee and will serve for the next two years in that role. Hilda was part of a slate of officers and board members elected by acclamation during the national convention in late June. The first-ever virtual confab was attended by over 1,000 delegates representing every state, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico.

Hilda came to the attention of the national LWV through her work as state President of the LWV-LA in publicizing a demand for a U.S. Senate hearing on HR-1: For the People Act, hosting a luncheon for legislators and representatives of community organizations on the LWV's redistricting program People Powered Fair Maps, and instigating the LWVLA's federal lawsuit challenging Louisiana's Emergency Voting Plan.

The Nominating Committee plays a key role in ensuring the LWV's strategic initiatives are met by identifying and recruiting the leadership team that will fulfill that mission.  "I am excited about service on the LWV-US Nominating Committee. We have made tremendous progress on important issues in recent years and I will work to select candidates who will continue to move our organization forward apace, applying the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion," she said in accepting the office. "There is renewed energy around our role as defenders of democracy and we need to ensure we have the leaders to build on that momentum."

Hilda is a retired educator. She joined the LWV in 2013.
HILDA WALKER THOMAS will serve on the LWV-US nominating committee through 2022.
