Questions specific to the position

1. Do you support expanding the mental health facilities at the jail? I support the expand of the mental health facilities because it is currently being constructed and the federal government has already ear-marked the funding. We don't need to utilize the entire building for mental health. I will use a portion of building for training to reform prisoners and reduce the recidivism rate. I will provide them with certifications and apprenticeship training programs in Electrical, Plumping, Welding, Auto-cad, Elevator repair, and Entrepreneurship course.
2. What would be the adequate staffing of mental health professionals at the jail? The adequate staffing would be based on the current prisoner ratio of 900 inmates. Mental health professionals should be available 24 hours a day and during the core hours of operation from 9am-5pm. Also the devaluation process should include two of the acute outpatient hospitals and an external mental health facility that is catered to prisoners locally.
3. What qualifications and training should be required of deputy sheriffs? All deputy sheriff should at some point be post qualified in corrections and law enforcement. We will enter into an endeavor agreement with the City of New Orleans and the New Orleans Police Department to attend the same academy and classes in investigation, crime scene protection, use of force, fire arms training, intoxilyzer 500, emergency vehicle operations, and how to conduct traffic accidents and write traffic citations and summons. We will aid NOPD in fighting crime and patrol the streets of New Orleans and open a juvenile curfew unit.
4. Are salaries adequate to attract and keep competent deputies? The salary should be the same as the surrounding parishes sheriffs department , starting at $45K per year, depending on education. Associated degree will be an additional $1000 per year and a Bachelor degree would be an additional $1500 per years.
