Women’s issues committee:
Women and families

• Women on Wednesdays, Zoom meetings
• Office of Women’s Health Leadership Team—possible march (if someone takes the lead on planning); possibility of having a press conference in conjunction with the 100 anniversary of women’s voting rights; webinar in the Fall
• Conference calls: Legislative Agenda for Women (LAW); priority issues: economic security (equal pay; paid sick and family leave); support a living wage: health care issues; preventing violence against women
• NOW LOVE group—on a Zoom panel about the vote
• Interview on The Vote: Louisiana Women Lead, WYES—along with Sybil Morial; Sen. Mary Landrieu; Supreme Court Bernette Joshua Johnson; former state Representative Julie Stokes; Mary Zervigon and the Historic New Orleans Collection curator and historian Eric Seiferth—part of the PBS documentary series


Job Description: Chair of the Women’s Issues Committee

The Chair of the Women’s Issues Committee is responsible for ensuring
• Regular written reports to the LWVLA Board summarizing progress to date
• Attendance at as many Board meetings as possible
• Support for women’s rights, including personal and domestic safety and economic justice and security
• Equal pay for women, raising the minimum wage, paid sick and family leave, affordable quality childcare and comprehensive sexual health education
• Prevention of abuse against women and better addressing domestic and campus violence and sexual assault
• Support for specific local, state and federal legislation to improve and protect the interests of women and their families
• Protection of women’s sexual and reproductive health
• Attendance or representation at coordination meetings/phone conferences of LAW and other organizations and coalitions that promote women’s issues
• Contact with membership about events, legislation and programs

In addition to supporting legislative bills and working with like-minded coalitions on informative events and advocacy, the Women’s Issues Committee, with assistance from the Board, will expand outreach to other regions of Louisiana which have been less active in legislative visits and sessions. The Women’s Issues Committee will encourage members to meet with their legislators and to be knowledgeable of pending bills.
